This is a view of Mount Hood from the top of Council Crest in Portland, Oregon. Mount Hood is a seismically active volcano (last minor eruption in 1907). With an elevation of around 11,250 feet, it is snow-capped all year round. There is a wonderful hotel, The Timberline Lodge (which featured in the film The Shining), situated just at the tree-line and providing a base for the popular timber line trail which circumnavigates the mountain. My son, Alistair, has walked this trail and ascended to the peak. This photo was taken on my most recent visit to Portland from Council Crest Park, on the hills to the southwest of Portland city centre. The distance to Mount Hood here is about 60 miles, which gives a good sense of just how imposing this mountain, the highest in Oregon, really is.
