We took a short break in Venice last week and stayed at the San Clemente Palace, a self-contained Kempinski hotel on an Island in the lagoon, just beyond the Giudecca. It was a delight to find the gardens dotted with sculptures by the South Korean sculptor Kim Seung-Hwan. Flowing, liquid metal forms in stainless steel on the theme of Organism, reminiscent of the T-1000 in the second Terminator film, and jagged circles that reminded me of the alien writing in Arrival, the sculptures have a decidedly alien presence. The artist was born in the same year as me (1962) which I found to be a strangely significant coincidence.
